Drainer - occupational

Scope of work

Drainage work below ground level, other than drainage work for which an endorsement on a drainers licence is required to perform the work.

Qualifications required

  • Successful completion of competencies in the Queensland apprenticeship in plumbing and drainage that would allow the applicant to qualify for a Certificate II in Drainage or Certificate III in Plumbing (that includes completion of drainage stream); or
  • A Certificate III in Plumbing (that includes completion of drainage stream) or Certificate II in Drainage completed as part of an apprenticeship in an Australian jurisdiction other than Queensland; or
  • A qualification completed through an apprenticeship in Australia which has been assessed and verified by a registered training organisation as at least equivalent to a Certificate II in Drainage or Certificate III in Plumbing (that includes completion of drainage stream); or
  • A qualification completed through an apprenticeship in another country which has been assessed and verified by a registered training organisation as at least equivalent to a Certificate II in Drainage; or
  • A qualification completed through an apprenticeship in another country which:
    • (a) has been assessed and verified by a registered training organisation as at least equivalent to a Certificate II in Drainage or Certificate III in Plumbing (that includes completion of drainage stream); and 
    • (b) the applicant has also successfully completed relevant gap training competencies recognised in the National Register on Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Australia; or
  • A Certificate II in Drainage or Certificate III in Plumbing (that includes completion of the drainage stream), completed other than as part of an apprenticeship, provided that the qualification was not obtained through a recognition of prior learning process that relied on the applicant performing unlawful work.

Experience required

(a) At least one year’s practical drainage experience; or 
(b) practical experience at least equivalent to the practical experience mentioned in paragraph (a).
