Cyclone-affected home owners warned about unlicensed contractors

4 March 2015

Home owners in cyclone-affected central Queensland needing repairs or rebuilding work are warned to only use licensed contractors approved by their insurers, and for those without insurance to also only use licensed contractors.

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) says licensed builders and contractors offer home owners the best protection against defective work and unscrupulous behaviour.

QBCC Commissioner, Steve Griffin, has urged home owners to resist the temptation to rush into repairs and rebuilding with the first contractor offering their services.

“Sadly, unlicensed individuals move into disaster zones trying to take advantage of vulnerable people,” Mr Griffin said.

He said insurance companies organise building contractors for their policy holders and home owners should not risk their insurance by taking unapproved action.

Mr Griffin urged those without insurance to ask to see a contractor’s QBCC licence and to conduct a free licence search on the QBCC website, or by phoning the QBCC 24/7 on 139 333.
