Record fine for unlicensed contracting over Torres Strait desalination plants
A record fine for unlicensed contracting has been issued to a company which was
installing five desalination plants in the Torres Strait.
General Manager of the Building Services Authority, Ian Jennings, said a case
brought by the BSA saw Garard Moulded Pre-Cast Pty Ltd convicted and fined
$60,000 in Cairns Magistrates Court on 15 March.
Company director Denis Joseph James was convicted of unlicensed contracting and
fined $12,000, operations manager Leslie John Szkirpan was convicted of unlicensed
contracting and fined $8,000 and each man was ordered to pay costs of $950.
Mr Jennings said the record fine was a strong deterrent to unlicensed contracting and
would help to protect the community, subcontractors and project tenderers.
