Home and property owners are urged to only use licensed contractors and to ensure they have a contract in place, following recent cases of unlicensed building activity in Mt Isa.
The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) says licensed contractors provide home owners with peace of mind, and building contracts provide home warranty insurance.
“Recent reports about unlicensed individuals performing building work without contracts in place mean home owners are vulnerable to shoddy, uninsured work,” said QBCC Acting Commissioner, Kellie Lowe.
She urged home owners to obtain at least three quotes from licensed contractors and to conduct a free licence search on the QBCC website.
“The search will show you exactly what work the licensee is entitled to do, a full history of the licence and any restrictions placed on it.”
Ms Lowe also urged anyone with relevant qualifications and experience in the building industry who did not have a licence to contact the QBCC to discuss options for gaining one.
Anyone with licensing enquiries can contact the QBCC 24/7 on 139 333.
