Scope of work

1. Certify – restricted to gaseous, water mist and reticulated foam proportioning systems

  • Certify, inspect and test gaseous, water mist and reticulated foam proportioning systems.

2. Certify – restricted to chemical and foam special hazard systems

  • Certify, inspect and test chemical and foam stored pressure systems.

3. Install and Maintain

  • Install and maintain gaseous, water mist and reticulated foam proportioning systems, and chemical and foam stored pressure systems.

4. Maintain – restricted to gaseous, water mist and reticulated foam proportioning systems

  • Maintain gaseous, water mist and reticulated foam proportioning systems.

Qualifications required

1. Certify – restricted to gaseous, water mist and reticulated foam proportioning systems

  • successful completion of all competency units contained in Certificate IV in Fire Systems Compliance (Special Hazards) 30903QLD except for units:

    • Certify Wet and Dry Chemical Suppression Systems (Installation) 4IAI, and
    • Certify Wet and Dry Chemical Suppression Systems (Maintenance) 4MAJ, or
  • successful completion of a course the commission considers equivalent to the above.

2. Certify – restricted to chemical and foam special hazard systems

  • successful completion of all competency units contained in Certificate IV in Fire Systems Compliance (Special Hazards) 30903QLD except for units:

    • Certify Gaseous Fire Suppression Systems (Installation) 4IAJ, and
    • Certify Gaseous Fire Suppression Systems (Maintenance) 4MAK, or
  • successful completion of a course the commission considers equivalent to the above.

3. Install and Maintain

  • successful completion of Certificate III in Fire Protection CPC32813, or
  • successful completion of a course the commission considers equivalent.

4. Maintain – restricted to gaseous, water mist and reticulated foam proportioning systems

  • successful completion of Certificate III in Fire Protection Inspection and Testing CPP30811, including the following units of competency:

    • Inspect and Maintain Portable Foam-Generating Equipment CPPFES3024A
    • Inspect, test and maintain Gaseous Fire Suppression Systems CPPFES2025A
    • Inspect, Test and Maintain non-gaseous fire suppression systems CPPFES2027A, or
  • successful completion of a course the commission considers equivalent to the above.

Managerial course

Completion of the approved managerial course.

Experience required

Two years experience, which includes experience gained during an apprenticeship or other training, in:

  • the licence class scope of work, or
  • other work, if the commission considers experience on the other work is at least equivalent to experience in the scope of work for the class.

Financial requirements

The relevant financial requirements in the board’s policies. 

Note: Extinguishing Agent Handling Licence

Under Federal Government legislation, systems and extinguishers using ozone depleting substances and synthetic greenhouse gases are permitted. However they must be serviced and maintained by technicians who hold an Extinguishing Agent Handling Licence (EAHL). Before working on any gaseous fire suppression system or portable fire extinguisher, technicians should check they hold an appropriate EAHL licence.

Important note:

  • Interstate Applicants – may be eligible to obtain a licence through Mutual Recognition
  • Overseas Applicants – may have to have an overseas qualification assessed for equivalency prior to applying.

Professional Indemnity Insurance

Professional Indemnity Insurance is required for this licence class.

Registered Training Organisations (RTOs)

Registered Training Organisations issue formal qualifications to people who successfully complete training. Please note that this list is a guide only and subject to change. We strive to ensure that the information contained is accurate and up-to-date.

Other qualifications can be:

  • apprenticeship papers
  • documentation showing you successfully completed the appropriate course for this licence class
  • documentation showing you successfully completed an equivalent course for this licence class (e.g. similar modules)
  • recognition certificate
  • a qualification of statement of attainment of the required competency issued by an approved authority for the licence class.

Recognition of prior learning

If you do not hold a formal technical qualification, you may be able to obtain it through recognition of prior learning (RPL) by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). The following RTOs may be able to provide RPL services for the restricted licence classes listed above:
