About mechanical services licences and how to apply

What is mechanical services work?

Mechanical services work involves the construction, installation, replacement, repair, alteration, maintenance, testing or commissioning of a mechanical heating or cooling system in commercial and residential buildings, for example air conditioning, refrigeration and air handling systems.

Mechanical services work also includes work on medical gas systems found in hospitals and other health services such as dental facilities.

These systems contribute to the overall health and safety of the community and can have fatal consequences if incorrectly installed or maintained.

Who needs to have a mechanical services licence?

New mechanical services licensing requirements commenced on 1 January 2020.

The new laws apply if you contract for, supervise or personally carry out mechanical services work in Queensland regardless of the value of the work.

From 1 July 2020 contractors who perform mechanical services work, have been required to be licensed. Nominee supervisors, who provide the practical experience for a company have also required a licence from this time.

From 1 January 2022 all other individuals (workers) performing mechanical services work for a licensed contractor must have the relevant mechanical services occupational licence.
