Deadline delivers questions for PSIs

The pool barrier compliance deadline does not change the role of the PSI, but PSIs can expect pool owners to have a lot of new questions about how the deadline affects forms 26 and 36.

Anyone who is the owner of a pool is responsible from 1 December for ensuring the fence complies. A form 26 and 36 does not change this.

There are no changes to pool safety certificates.  Certificates are still only needed in the event of sale or lease, and the time allowed for getting a certificate won't change.


PSIs play a role when owners work on their own fences

With the pool safety compliance deadline just around the corner, some pool owners will want to do significant work to their pool fence.

Pool owners can already do some repairs and maintenance on a pool fence without building approval. Some owners can do further works without building approval provided they have the work inspected by a pool safety inspector (PSI).

This applies to work on a barrier for an existing non-shared pool for a class 1a building (house or townhouse), and there are limits for fences over two metres in height.


Demand for building pool fences set to increase

Pool fence installation and repair work could soon be on the increase with the deadline for compliance with pool safety laws looming on 30 November, 2015.

If you are a QBCC licensee and are wondering who can do what, the same rules apply to pool fences as with other building work.

Whilst anyone can legally build or repair pool fences up to the value of $3,300 (including GST, labour and materials), we always recommend home owners engage a QBCC licensee.


What’s changing and what isn’t for PSIs

With this week’s launch of a public awareness campaign, pool safety laws will be in the spotlight like never before.

As pool safety inspectors (PSIs), you will be the go-to people for pool owners who are seeking advice on how to make their pool barriers compliant. 

So, what will change from 1 December, 2015?

Well, nothing will change for an existing property that has been sold or leased. Those laws are not changing. They are the same laws that have been in place since December, 2010.


Pool fences must measure up by 30 November

This week the Minister for Housing and Public Works, Leeanne Enoch, launched a pool safety campaign urging pool owners to ensure their pool fences comply with state laws by 30 November.

With drowning being one of the leading causes of death in Queensland for chidren under five, it is important that Queenslanders do everything possible to prevent such tragedies from occurring.

Compliant pool fencing, along with active supervision and learning to swim, can save lives.


PSIs give advice as deadline looms

In the lead up to the 30 November deadline for the single pool safety standard, there is likely to be demand for your expertise as a pool safety inspector (PSI) like never before.

All owners of regulated pools need to ensure their pool barrier is compliant with the safety standard by 30 November 2015. A current pool safety certificate  is only required if an owner is selling or leasing the property.

Pool safety inspectors (PSIs) and local government officers from across Queensland converged in Brisbane earlier this month to discuss their important roles in pool safety inspection and compliance.

CEO of Hannah’s Foundation and licensed PSI, Andrew Plint, delivered a powerful presentation about why pool safety matters in reducing immersion incidents for young childen under five years of age.


PSIs must provide pool safety certificates to owners

There have been some complaints from pool owners that the pool safety inspector (PSI) has withheld their pool safety certificate pending payment of their inspection or re-inspection fee.

It is a strict requirement that the PSI provides the pool safety certificate within two business days of inspecting the pool and finding it compliant.

A PSI must supply the certificate to the pool owner, regardless of any contractual issues the PSI might have regarding payment of fees.
