Apply for a licence

Apply for a provisional or occupational plumbing and drainage licence

You may be issued with either a provisional or open licence, depending upon your experience and/or qualifications. We may also place an endorsement or condition on your licence.

To find out more about each class, see Licence classes and Apply for a licence.

What licence should I apply for?

You must progress through a few stages before you can apply for an open plumbers licence:

  • If you have completed your apprenticeship, you can only apply for a provisional plumber's licence. You must work under supervision for at least 1 year before you can move onto the next stage of licensing.
  • If you have completed at least 1 year as a provisional licensee, you can apply for an open plumbers licence.
  • If you hold an open licence, have completed the required units from Certificate IV in Plumbing and can meet the financial requirements, you can apply for a plumbing and drainage contractor or nominee supervisor licence

For a drainers licence, the stages are similar:

  • If you have completed a Certificate II in Drainage, you can apply for a provisional drainers licence when you can demonstrate you have gained 1 year of practical experience (this experience can be gained during training)
  • If you have completed a plumbing and drainage apprenticeship, including at least 1 year of practical experience, you can also apply for a provisional drainers licence
  • If you have completed at least 1 year of practical experience as a provisional drainer (after completion of training), you can apply for your open drainers licence
  • If you hold an open licence, have completed the required units from the Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services and can meet the financial requirements, you can apply for a drainage contractor or nominee supervisor licence
