Storm-hit residents warned about unlicensed building work

30 October 2015

Chinchilla residents have been urged to use licensed contractors when carrying out building and repair work in the wake of Wednesday’s hailstorm.

Minister for Housing and Public Works, Leeanne Enoch, said she understood if residents were in a hurry to get repairs done but for long-term peace of mind they should only use contractors with appropriate qualifications and licenses.

“Unqualified and unscrupulous people often show up after a natural disaster offering to do quick and cheap repairs—but their work might end up proving costly in the long run,” Ms Enoch said.

The Minister urged home owners to get at least three quotes for repair work and to conduct a free licence check on the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) website.

“You can find out what work the person is entitled to perform and a full history of the licence.”

Home owners can also phone the QBCC 24/7 on 139 333.

QBCC building inspectors will be in Chinchilla and the Western Downs from next week to offer advice to residents and to check on any building work underway.
