Scope of work

1. Certify

  • Certify, inspect and test reticulated water based fire suppression systems or fire sprinkler systems, which are of a:

    • commercial or industrial type designed in accordance with AS 2118.1, and
    • domestic type designed in accordance with AS 2118.5, or a residential type designed in accordance with AS 2118.4, to a maximum height of 4 storeys.

2. Certify – restricted to commercial or industrial type

  • Certify, inspect and test reticulated water based fire suppression systems or fire sprinkler systems which are of a commercial or industrial type designed in accordance with AS 2118.1.

3. Certify – restricted to domestic or residential type

  • Certify, inspect and test reticulated water based fire suppression systems or fire sprinkler systems which are of a domestic type designed in accordance with AS 2118.5, or of a residential type designed in accordance with AS 2118.4, to a maximum height of 4 storeys.

4. Install and Maintain

  • Install and maintain reticulated water based fire suppression systems or fire sprinkler systems which are of a:

    • commercial or industrial type designed in accordance with AS 2118.1, and
    • domestic type designed in accordance with AS 2118.5, or a residential type designed in accordance with AS 2118.4, to a maximum height of 4 storeys. 

Note: Install and Maintain licences include the ability to Inspect and Test.

5. Install and Maintain – restricted to commercial or industrial type

  • Install and maintain reticulated water based fire suppression systems or fire sprinkler systems which are of a commercial or industrial type designed in accordance with AS 2118.1

6. Install and Maintain – restricted to domestic or residential type

  • Install and maintain reticulated water based fire suppression systems or fire sprinkler systems which are of a domestic type designed in accordance with AS 2118.5, or of a residential type designed in accordance with AS 2118.4, to a maximum height of 4 storeys. 

Note: Install and Maintain licences include the ability to Inspect and Test.

7. Inspect and Test

  • Inspect and test reticulated water based fire suppression systems or fire sprinkler systems which are of a:

    • commercial or industrial type designed in accordance with AS 2118.1, and
    • domestic type designed in accordance with AS 2118.5, or a residential type designed in accordance with AS 2118.4, to a maximum height of 4 storeys.

Qualifications required

1. Certify

  • successful completion of Certificate IV in Fire Systems Compliance (Hydrants, Sprinklers and Pump-Sets) 30903QLD, or
  • successful completion of a course the commission considers equivalent to the above.

2. Certify – restricted to commercial or industrial type

  • successful completion of Certificate IV in Fire Systems Compliance (Hydrants, Sprinklers and Pump-Sets) 30903QLD, or
  • successful completion of a course the commission considers equivalent to the above.

3. Certify – restricted to domestic or residential type

  • successful completion of Certificate IV in Fire Systems Compliance (Hydrants, Sprinklers and Pump-Sets) 30903QLD, or
  • successful completion of a course the commission considers equivalent to the above.

4. Install and Maintain

  • successful completion of one of the following:

    • Certificate III in Plumbing CPC32413; or
    • Certificate III in Plumbing (Mechanical Services) CPC32513; or
    • Certificate III in Fire Protection CPC32813; plus completion of the following units of competency:
      • install domestic and residential life safety sprinkler systems CPCPFS3037A
      • commission domestic and residential fire suppression sprinkler systems CPCPFS4021A
      • design residential and domestic fire sprinkler systems CPCPFS4024A.
  • successful completion of a course the commission considers equivalent to the above. 

5. Install and Maintain – restricted to commercial or industrial type

  • successful completion of one of the following:

    • Certificate III in Plumbing CPC32413; or
    • Certificate III in Plumbing (Mechanical Services) CPC32513; or
    • Certificate III in Fire Protection CPC32813; or
  • successful completion of a course the commission considers equivalent to the above.

6. Install and Maintain – restricted to domestic or residential type

  • successful completion of one of the following:

    • Certificate III in Plumbing CPC32413; or
    • Certificate III in Plumbing (Mechanical Services) CPC32513; or
    • Certificate III in Fire Protection CPC32813; plus completion of the following units of competency:
      • install domestic and residential life safety sprinkler systems CPCPFS3037A
      • commission domestic and residential fire suppression sprinkler systems CPCPFS4021A
      • design residential and domestic fire sprinkler systems CPCPFS4024A.
  • successful completion of a course the commission considers equivalent to the above.

7. Inspect and Test

  • successful completion of one of the following:

    • Certificate III in Plumbing CPC32413; or
    • Certificate III in Plumbing (Mechanical Services) CPC32513; or
    • Certificate III in Fire Protection CPC32813; plus completion of the following units of competency:
      • install domestic and residential life safety sprinkler systems CPCPFS3037A
      • commission domestic and residential fire suppression sprinkler systems CPCPFS4021A
      • design residential and domestic fire sprinkler systems CPCPFS4024A.
  • successful completion of a course the commission considers equivalent to the above.

Managerial course

Completion of the approved managerial course.

Experience required

Two years experience, which includes experience gained during an apprenticeship or other training, in:

  • the licence class scope of work, or
  • other work the commission is satisfied is at least equivalent to experience in the scope of work for the class.

Financial requirements

The relevant financial requirements in the board’s policies.

Important note:

  • Interstate Applicants – may be eligible to obtain a licence through Mutual Recognition
  • Overseas Applicants – may have to have an overseas qualification assessed for equivalency prior to applying.

Professional Indemnity Insurance

Professional Indemnity Insurance is required for this licence class.

Registered Training Organisations (RTOs)

Registered Training Organisations issue formal qualifications to people who successfully complete training. Please note that this list is a guide only and subject to change. We strive to ensure that the information contained is accurate and up-to-date.

Other qualifications can be:

  • apprenticeship papers
  • documentation showing you successfully completed the appropriate course for this licence class
  • documentation showing you successfully completed an equivalent course for this licence class (e.g. similar modules)
  • recognition certificate
  • a qualification of statement of attainment of the required competency issued by an approved authority for the licence class.

Recognition of prior learning

If you do not hold a formal technical qualification, you may be able to obtain it through recognition of prior learning (RPL) by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). The following RTOs may be able to provide RPL services for the restricted licence classes listed above:
