Scope of work

1. Swimming pool construction, installation and maintenance (construction)

  • Earthworks and drainage for the construction of concrete swimming pools and spas
  • Place and fix reinforcement for the construction of concrete swimming pools and spas
  • Construct formwork for concrete swimming pools and spas
  • Place and finish concrete or other materials to provide a shape or form for concrete swimming pools and spas
  • Ancillary pipework including general filtration, sanitation, water chemistry, solar heating and basic hydraulics for concrete swimming pools and spas
  • Landscaping works associated with the construction of concrete swimming pools and spas, including pool fencing and paving
  • Ceramic tiling, painting, coping and internal finishes associated with the construction of concrete swimming pools and spas
  • Prepare plans and specifications for concrete swimming pools and spas, if the plans and specifications are:
    • for the licensee's personal use, or
    • for use in building work to be performed by the licensee personally
  • Maintenance and general repair of concrete swimming pools and spas
  • Install pool accessories, including, for example, pool heating systems
  • Incidental work of another class.

2. Swimming pool construction, installation and maintenance (installation)

  • Earthworks and drainage for the installation of prefabricated and fibreglass swimming pools and spas
  • Install prefabricated and fibreglass swimming pools and spas
  • Ancillary pipework including general filtration, sanitation, water chemistry, solar heating and basic hydraulics for prefabricated and fibreglass swimming pools and spas
  • Place and finish bedding sand or other suitable materials for prefabricated and fibreglass swimming pools and spas, including packing, filling and levelling
  • Place and fix formwork, reinforcement and concrete for the installation of prefabricated and fibreglass swimming pools and spas
  • Landscaping works associated with the installation of prefabricated and fibreglass swimming pools and spas, including pool fencing and paving
  • Install coping and tiling associated with the installation of prefabricated and fibreglass swimming pools and spas
  • Prepare plans and specifications for concrete swimming pools and spas, if the plans and specifications are:
    • for the licensee's personal use, or
    • for use in building work to be performed by the licensee personally
  • Maintenance and general repair of prefabricated and fibreglass swimming pools and spas
  • Install pool accessories, including, for example, pool heating systems
  • Incidental work of another class.

3. Swimming pool construction, installation and maintenance (maintenance and accessories)

  • Non-structural maintenance and general repair of swimming pools and spas
  • Install pool accessories, including, for example, pool heating systems
  • Landscaping works associated with the maintenance and general repair of swimming pools and spas, including pool fencing and paving
  • Incidental work of another class.

The scope of work for 1, 2 and 3 does not include:

  • construction, installation, maintenance or repair of membrane shade structures, or
  • personally carrying out any building work for which:
    • a fire protection licence is required, or
    • an occupational licence is required unless the licensee holds the occupational licence.

Definitions

  • Fibreglass includes reinforced plastic
  • Prefabricated pools includes above ground pools
  • Maintenance and general repair includes the removal, replacement or addition of accessories or equipment.

Qualifications required

1. Swimming pool construction, installation and maintenance (construction)

  • successful completion of the following units of competency from Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) CPC40110:

    • CPCCBC4002A — Manage occupational health and safety in the building and construction workplace
    • CPCCBC4003A — Select and prepare a construction contract
    • CPCCBC4004A — Identify and produce estimated costs for building and construction projects
    • CPCCBC4006A — Select, procure and store construction materials for low rise projects
    • CPCCBC4008A — Conduct on-site supervision of building and construction projects
    • CPCCBC4009A — Apply legal requirements to building and construction projects
    • BSBSMB406 — Manage small business finances
  • successful completion of a course the commission considers equivalent to the above
  • the Commission considers that completion of the stated units of competency listed in the Technical qualifications for licensing (the Technical Qualifications), if completed as part of a Certificate IV Swimming Pool & Spa Building CPC40808, is an equivalent course to that specified in the Technical Qualifications for this licence.”   

2. Swimming pool construction, installation and maintenance (installation)

  • successful completion of the following units of competency from Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) CPC40110:

    • CPCCBC4002A — Manage occupational health and safety in the building and construction workplace
    • CPCCBC4003A — Select and prepare a construction contract
    • CPCCBC4004A — Identify and produce estimated costs for building and construction projects
    • CPCCBC4006A — Select, procure and store construction materials for low rise projects
    • CPCCBC4008A — Conduct on-site supervision of building and construction projects
    • CPCCBC4009A — Apply legal requirements to building and construction projects

  • successful completion of a course the commission considers equivalent to the above.

3. Swimming Pool construction, installation and maintenance (maintenance and accessories)

Any one of the following:

  • a statement of attainment, issued on partial completion of Certificate III in Swimming Pool and Spa Construction Installation and Maintenance 30918QLD, which states that the units of competency attained have been recognised by the National Swimming Pool Institute as meeting industry requirements for working in swimming pool maintenance and accessories
  • successful completion of a course the commission considers equivalent to the above
  • a qualification or statement of attainment of required competency for the class of licence
  • the Commission considers that the successful completion of the course Certificate III in Swimming Pool & Spa Service CPP31212 is an equivalent course to that specified in the Technical qualifications for licensing (April 2016) for this licence.”    

Managerial course

Completion of the approved managerial course.

Registered Training Organisations

Registered Training Organisations issue formal qualifications to people who successfully complete training. Please note that this list is a guide only and subject to change. We strive to ensure that the information contained is accurate and up-to-date.

Other qualifications can be:

  • apprenticeship papers
  • documentation showing you successfully completed the appropriate course for this licence class
  • documentation showing you successfully completed an equivalent course for this licence class (e.g. similar modules)
  • recognition certificate
  • a qualification of statement of attainment of the required competency issued by an approved authority for the licence class.

Recognition of prior learning

If you do not hold a formal technical qualification, you may be able to obtain it through recognition of prior learning (RPL) by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
