Protect one of your biggest investments, always check a contractor’s licence
Your home is one of your biggest investments, so when it comes to building or renovating, don’t rely on gut instinct, rely on proof. Using a licensed contractor is key to ensuring work meets Queensland’s high building standards.
The QBCC has made it easier than ever to verify a contractor’s licence with the introduction of digital licences.
Whether it’s a physical card or a digital licence shown on a phone, you should always ask to see a licence before signing a contract or making a payment.
You can also use the QBCC’s online find a local contractor tool. Alternatively, if you have a person’s licence number or name, you can look them up in the QBCC’s licensee register to check their work history, including any infringements recorded against them.
Why QBCC digital licences make it easier for home owners
In late 2025, the QBCC, together with the Queensland Government rolled out digital licences via the Queensland Digital Licence app. While going digital is optional for contractors, home owners can now request to see either version.
Digital licences allow you to instantly verify a contractor’s credentials on the spot, giving peace of mind that they’re dealing with a qualified professional. It’s a simple, secure way to help protect your investment and avoid unlicensed work.
What’s in it for you?
Physical licences are still issued to licences, however, a QBCC digital licence provides you with another option to verify they're licensed to do the work they are quoting for.
- Instant information – view their licence status and check their work history, including any infringements, on the spot.
- Protect your investment – using a licensed contractor means you are covered under the Queensland Home Warranty Scheme.
- Peace of mind – a licence is proof you’re dealing with a qualified contractor who meets Queensland’s construction standards.
