Licensed contractors asked to register to help rebuild Townsville homes

8 February 2019

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) is calling for licensed contractors willing to work in the Townsville area to register online for the North Queensland Flood Register in the wake of the devastating floods.

QBCC Commissioner Brett Bassett said once licensed contractors had signed up for the dedicated online register, the community would be able to use it to source appropriately licensed building and trade contractors for repairs.

“We are aware that some licensed contractors who work in Townsville will have been impacted by the floods themselves and aren’t yet able to work,” Mr Bassett said.

“This register allows for the community to filter their search for local contractors, or alternatively those from around the state who are able to travel.

“Licensed contractors can include their details on the register, which will then be vetted and subsequently made available to home and business owners needing repairs in the coming days.

“While there may be an urgent need to get repairs underway, it is still important to obtain at least three quotes from contractors with the appropriate licences for the type of work required.”

This is a special register open to trades who will be in the highest demand locally.

In addition to QBCC licensees, the register will also include asbestos removalists, gas and petroleum contractors, and electricians.

“We want to make it as simple as possible for people who have been impacted by the floods to get their homes and businesses in order as quickly as they can, but ensuring the work is carried out by appropriately qualified and licensed contractors is key,” Mr Bassett said.

Mr Bassett said the North Queensland Flood Register was an interagency initiative with the Electrical Safety Office, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, and Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy.

Licensed contractors from the partner agencies can register their interest at myQBCC. The register will be available to the public in coming days.

In addition, Master Electricians Australia is working with the Queensland Government and Ergon Energy to coordinate electrical service support to restore connections. Electrical contractors can register at or call 1300 889 198.
